The Kansas City Streetcar Authority recently announced the arrival of its newest streetcar, marking the first of eight new streetcars for a project aimed at extending the line by 3.5 miles south. This expansion will connect Union Station to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus and is expected to become operational in early 2025.
Streetcar Line Extension Project
The new streetcars are essential for the extended line, and CAF USA Inc., the company manufacturing them, plans to deliver the remaining streetcars to Kansas City every four weeks. The newly arrived streetcar, numbered #807, was showcased for the first time on Friday afternoon after arriving from Elmira, New York. Each of these streetcars can travel both ways on the track, measure 77 feet long, weigh 78,000 pounds, and can accommodate up to 150 passengers at once.
Further Expansion Plans
In addition to the southern extension, there are also plans to extend the Kansas City streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. This project is scheduled to begin this year, with the aim to open by late 2025 or early 2026. The cost of the southern extension is estimated at $351 million, while the additional segment to Berkley Riverfront is expected to cost $61.1 million.
